A bloke managed to save a baby deer from drowning after jumping into a freezing cold canal in his undies to help it back onto dry land.

Marc Headon - a painter and decorator from Gainsborough, Lincolnshire - had a job 'rained off' due to adverse weather.

He was driving in Saxilby with his colleague, Jamie Toyne, when he spotted something unusual in the canal and decided to stop the car.

"I was driving to pick up my daughter when something caught mine and Jamie's eye in the canal," Marc, 27, told LADbible.

"I thought it was a fish as we do a lot of fishing, when we realised it was a deer."

Marc then stripped off into his boxers and leapt into the cold water.

He continued: "I noticed it was struggling and close to drowning, so without thinking I jumped in and pulled it to safety.

"Jamie helped me get the deer out and helped me out. I carried it to the top of the bank, where we wrapped it in blankets and tried to calm it and keep it warm, as it was near a busy road."

Jamie filmed the rescue in action and uploaded it to Facebook on Sunday evening (26 May) - and it quickly went viral.

"Just driving past the canal in Saxilby, and saw some ears in the water," Jamie wrote.

"We got out and saw it was a baby dear struggling to keep its head up. It was seconds away from drowning, must have been in there for hours.

"Marc jumped straight in and saved it."

Jamie had to stop filming as he helped Marc pull the deer out of the water and onto the bank, but uploaded another clip showing his friend trying to keep the animal warm.

The two then drove the deer in their van to a friend's house, where they waited for Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust to take over.

"We took it to a friend's nearby, where we fed and watered it, waiting for it to come round," Marc explained.

"We waited for the Wildlife Trust to come pick it up and take it to safety - which they did after an hour or so, and informed me that we had saved the baby's life and thanked us for what we had done."

Jamie's Facebook post has now been shared more than 9,000 times and has 15,000 likes, with many social media users commenting to commend the LADs' quick thinking.

However, it is worth saying that you shouldn't try and copy this as the risks of jumping in to cold water are very high. Check out these safety tips.
