A dog walker has made a hero of himself by performing CPR on a man who he found on a beach after being talked through the process by a 999 call handler.

RIchard Garman was out with his dog near the Severn Estuary in southwest England when he saw a lifeless body on the beach last January.

He immediately rang the emergency services and reported that the body was that of a man who was not breathing, cold to the touch and had no discernible heartbeat.

He spoke to Sarah Fisher, a call handler with South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust 999.

"Richard was convinced the young man was dead and beyond any help. But I really wanted to get him to do something for the person," said Sarah.

Richard added: "I didn't think there was anything that could be done for him. But once I'd started CPR, I was determined to keep going."

As the call continues, the police arrive and Ms Fisher hands over to her colleagues, who went on to help Richard to save the man's life.

"The CPR from the bystander kept (the man) alive until we arrived to provide advanced life support. CPR is an essential skill that everyone should learn," said Matt Morris, Ambulance trust operations officer.

Richard later explained the situation. He was walking along the beach at 8am with his dog when he came across the man in distress. "He was lying on his back with his arms folded, like he was trying to keep warm," said Richard.

"Initially I thought he was a mannequin, but then I realised he was a real person. I'm amazed that the 'dead body' I saw on that bleak January morning is now a living person who is walking and talking. It felt like a lifetime. But seeing him in hospital alive afterwards made it all worthwhile"

The body was found to be that of a man who had attempted suicide at around 3am the night before and had lain on the beach throughout the night until he was found by Richard.

The man did not want to be named, but has made a recovery and released a statement that tahnks Richard and the emergency services. It read: "Thank you to everyone. It was almost certain that I was going to die, but I'm so grateful to have survived."
