A teenage data analyst has enjoyed a huge slice of beginner's luck - after scooping £120,000 ($145,000) with his first ever lottery ticket.

Sam Lawton, 19, was having a soak in the bath when he decided to play the National Lottery for the first time last Tuesday 12 August.

The lucky LAD was left gobsmacked after matching the winning numbers 3, 20, 26, 27 and 32 on the new Set for Life lottery game.

Sam purchased the ticket via an online mobile phone app for £1.50 ($1.80) and is now celebrating landing a cool £10,000 ($12k) for the next 12 months.

He plans to splash out on driving lessons, a deposit for a new home and a holiday to New York with his delighted girlfriend, 20-year-old Connie Belle.

Sam says he decided to play the new game, which involves matching five numbers and a 'Life Ball', after seeing fellow winner Dean Weymes, 24, on the TV last month.

Today Sam was able to celebrate his own win and cracked open a bottle of champagne at a press conference at posh Coombe Abbey Hotel, in Coventry.

Sam, who lives in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, with HR worker Connie and their one-year-old son, said: "It's just incredible. Nothing like this happens to me, I'm chuffed to bits."

The couple are planning to go to New York to see their friend.

He went on: "I'd seen the ads for the Set for Life game and thought how great it would be to win the prize. I then saw the winner Dean Weymes on the TV celebrating his Set for Life win and thought I'd have a go.

"I downloaded the National Lottery app, set up an account, put £10 into my account and then played a Lucky Dip and I did all this whilst having a bath.

"It was only one hour, maybe 90 minutes after I first played when I saw a message on my phone and it said I had won the second prize, £10,000 per month for 12 months."

Sam won £10,000 ($12k) for 12 months.

Sam continued: "Having never played before I asked my partner Connie to take a look. But like me, she had never played before so we called her brother Craig who has been playing the lottery for years.

"I sent him a screen grab of my phone screen and he said 'on my way, don't move' and within five minutes, he was at the front door.

"We all checked the tickets and sat there in disbelief wondering if it was true. It was a sleepless night and then I got up and went to work as usual at 8am.

"I started work at 8am and called the National Lottery hotline to check if I had won and by 8.45am I was on my way home as a winner. My head was spinning, I needed to see Connie."

The pair have a one-year-old son together.

"Work were great, they said go. It was so surreal because a few of us had been talking about Set For Life the week before. We were saying what would we do if we won, and there I was a winner.

"Connie and I chatted and then when we could we just popped into town and had a look around the shops. Everything still seems quite unreal - the news really is still sinking in.

"The next thing on my list is a driving licence. I haven't passed my test and with a small family I need wheels, maybe a BWM 1 Series. The win will allow me to learn to drive and get a car straight away - which is amazing."
