Move Over Pigs In Blankets, Tesco Is Releasing Pigs In Duvets

Move Over Pigs In Blankets, Tesco Is Releasing Pigs In Duvets

The festive pork treat arms race rolls on

Brace yourselves, it's only late September and already the Christmas food arms race is heating up.

After the announcement that Aldi was set to bring out foot long (yes, one whole foot) pigs in blankets, Asda returned fire and said that it too would be selling extra huge sausages in lovely bacon blankets.

Now a new challenger has entered the fray, this time in the form of Tesco.

The supermarket giant's offering adds something new to the party, rather than just size. OK, these snacks are not gigantic, but how about if I told you that Tesco's pigs in blankets are going to have lovely puff pastry duvets wrapped around them?

Of course, it makes sense, because the only thing better during the winter than a blanket is of course a duvet. Don't be surprised if we see Waitrose making a late bid for supremacy with 'pigs in blankets in duvets watching Netflix'.

Not sure exactly what that would entail, but have faith. It's the time of the season for miracles after all. And if anyone from Waitrose product development is reading this article - come on, you know you want to.

But back to the real point. Tesco is bringing out pigs in duvets. In reality, they're just a posh sausage roll and therefore consumable throughout the year, but Tesco's version will feature a lovely cranberry sauce to dip them in, making it a delicious festive treat.

They won't cost the earth, either. You can pick up a box of 400g worth for £5. Not quite the same value for money as Aldi's £3 foot-long pig in blanket, but still worth a go.

The offering from Asda is more expensive than that at £5, but comes with the promise of more girth than the Aldi version. Come on guys, it's not THAT kind of contest.

Asda also reckons you can feed ten people with just one, though their food boffins have clearly never been to my house on Christmas Day if they think that is even half-plausible.

I know what you're thinking - when can I sample one of these delights to see if they are good enough to make the Christmas dinner table?

Well, you've got a bit of a wait on your hands. They'll be in stores and available online from 12 November.

That's close enough to Christmas to start forgetting about your waistline once again.

If you aren't a meat eater, they've got you covered as well - there will also be a vegan and vegetarian roll selection out on the same day for just £2.

That will consist of three Moroccan spiced cauliflower rolls, three katsu curry vegetable rolls, and three butternut squash rolls, so you won't feel left out.
