Many of us will have our own horrifying memories of school dinners, but I'm sure none of them will compare to what the poor kids at one school got last week.

Furious parents of pupils at St Pius Primary in Dundee have compared the meal to 'prison food', with mum saying she 'wouldn't even give it to a dog'.

The meal, which consists of two sausages, one and a half spuds, some very watery gravy alongside custard and... I don't even know, is that a cake? All washed down with a glass of milk. Yum.

The local council has since said it will be speaking to the contractors responsible for the meal.

In the Facebook post originally sharing the photo, an angry parent wrote: "Not even joking, this is the shit St Pius Primary School is dishing out to the kids."

She added: "It's no wonder she [her daughter] asks for money every single day to go the shops with her pals.

"She is certainly not eating that. Packed lunches as of now."

The post was quickly flooded with comments from other parents who were shocked the food had been served to kids, with one saying it looked like 'prison food' and another branding the meal 'a disgrace'.

In response, the mum replied: "Thanks guys, it's a fucking disgrace putting that shit down to hungry/growing children.

"I honestly wouldn't give that to my dog."

She went on to add that she had since put in a formal complain to the school who had forwarded it on to the Tayside Contracts, who made the meals.

A spokeswoman for Dundee City Council has confirmed the picture was genuine and said: "We are in discussions with Tayside Contracts about this."

A spokeswoman for Tayside Contracts said: "Our menus and recipes are produced by a dedicated menu development team and involve a consultation process which includes pupils and other key stakeholders.

"Pupils choose which elements of this meal are put on their particular plate.

"Our sausages and burgers are made to a bespoke specification by our butcher and are reduced fat and salt to ensure they are a healthier option to reflect the requirements of the Scottish Government.

"Tayside Contracts quality management system is designed to ensure a high-quality meal is produced across the school meals service.

"If there are issues with meals identified, these are fully investigated and resolved."
