Faith in humanity has been restored after an anonymous donation worth £300 was made to a foodbank in Wales, just in time for Christmas.

Volunteers at a Carmarthenshire foodbank were astounded when a Tesco delivery driver arrived with a staggering 33 boxes of food and supplies, all donated by some unknown person.

In the five years since the foodbank opened its manager, 67-year-old Mydrim Davies said this was the 'biggest single donation' they'd ever had.

He told Wales Online: "I got a call from one of the managers of Tesco and they said 'we've just had an online order come in for food to be delivered on Friday so be prepared as it's at least £100 worth'.

"When the lorry turned up they opened up the side of the van and it was full of crates so I said 'how many are ours?' and they said 'all of them'.

"We can only run the foodbank because the community is so generous in the donations they make. We act as the middle man as we can then feed the people that come in. This is the biggest single donation that I can remember."

Whoever placed the order decided to keep their anonymity, but the Mydrim said he found the mystery person's true act of kindness 'truly overwhelming'.

He added: "It's truly overwhelming. They accessed our list of things we needed on Facebook so it was all of the things we needed such as tinned meat, tinned fruit, biscuits, custard, pasta, rice and a variety of things.

"I am humbled by people's generosity in general but this took it to a different level. It was like a breath of fresh air for us and a huge boost for everyone. We've got no idea who it came from and that was their wish and we would want to honour that wish."

In Wales alone statistics from The Trussell Trust said food bank supplies given to families in crisis in Wales increased by 3% in the past year and the banks rely on donations from members of the public to be able to supply people with supplies.

The Trust also added that there were 98,350 three-day food bags were given out between April 2017 and March 2018 - over a third of these, 35,403 , were supplies given to children.

These staggering figures are a stark reminder of the unfortunate need for foodbanks - but it's stories like these that are a reminder there are good people left in the world.
