Police are desperate for the mother of a newborn baby found in woodland to come forward.

It's been a week since the newborn's body was discovered alone in the woods, and detectives are still trying to piece together the circumstances surrounding the little girl's death.

The community in Heywood, Greater Manchester, near to the beauty spot where she was found, are staggered by the discovery, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Shabana Awan, who runs a nearby Premier Store shop explained how silence had descended on people in the friendly, working class community.

She told the MEN: "The police were still going door to door last night. But a neighbour said hardly anyone was opening their doors.

"Last week everyone was asking what had happened and were leaving flowers and teddies at the scene. Since then it has gone hush. Nobody wants to get involved.

"We thought by Monday we would know what has happened. Nobody is talking about it now - it's gone really quiet. Nobody wants to know."

But, regardless of what happened, police leading the investigation insist that there is help available to the baby's mother.

Detectives say they will do everything in their power to find out the full circumstances of this 'very upsetting' case.

One local explained how residents have visited the place where the baby girl's body was discovered on a daily basis to leave tributes.

A pile of babies toys, balloons and flowers fill the spot where the tiny child was left.

There are also dozens of tributes and messages scrawled on cards and notepaper.

One reads: "To a beautiful sweet princess in the arms of the angels, you are resting in peace baby girl."

Another handwritten note simply says: "R.I.P - God received a new little angel today."

A dog walker made the shocking discovery in woodland just after 7am last Wednesday morning.

Despite efforts of the police, mystery still surrounds the circumstances of the tragedy.

Officers have not been able to establish how she died or shed any light on how she ended up in the woods.

A Home Office pathologist who carried out a post mortem examination last week said the results were 'inconclusive'.

Tests are currently being carried out to try and better understand the circumstances.

They say it could take some time to establish exactly what happened to this newborn.

It's not yet known if she was alive when she was left alone at the beauty spot.

Investigating officers have set up a mobile phone line for either parent to contact them directly and discreetly.

Det Con, Kelly Bragg, previously appealed directly to the mother, who police fear may be in need of urgent medical attention.

She said: "If you are the baby's mother, I would ask you to get in touch either directly to me or ask a family member or a friend you can trust to contact me on your behalf and we will do everything we can to help you.

"We also understand it may be difficult for the baby's mother to come forward and as such I'm also asking for anyone who may have information that might assist us to get in touch on 07387705768."
