Britain is in for a major cold snap this coming weekend, with temperatures set to drop to levels lower than Iceland.

Scotland and the North of England will see the mercury sink to as low as -4 degrees, with even more southern areas getting temperatures around one or zero.

There might even be snow up in the Highlands, with weather coming in from the Arctic, bringing icy gusts and a smattering of snow over elevated areas.

"Low pressure will bring further bands of cloud, rain and showers through the end of the week, turning wintry across the Scottish Highlands, but with some drier interludes at times," said a spokesperson for The Weather Channel.

With Halloween gone and Bonfire Night out of the way, it is to be expected that things would get a little chilly, but not to the extent that is predicted to occur this weekend. It is thought that temperatures will be between one and three degrees lower than expected for this time of year.

"A cooler north-westerly flow will develop over the weekend with temperatures dropping below normal on Sunday, and it will turn drier," the spokesperson added.

Drier weather can make temperatures feel even lower than usual, with little air humidity to trap heat in.

That, combined with winds that may well broach gale force on Sunday afternoon, make the idea of a lazy weekend at home seem pretty enticing.

For those who do venture out, however, it is advised that they watch their step, as frost will form up and down the country overnight. The wind chill, particularly in Scotland, will become a factor too, with the snow that is due to fall on Saturday being surpassed by drier, but colder weather on Sunday.

The east of the country will be spared the brunt of the weather, with cold but clear days, while the North West, Wales and Scotland will be the worst hit by plummeting temperatures. Those in high areas, particularly in the Pennines, Highlands and Snowdonia, will be at risk due to sleet and snow sticking.

The South will get a warmer and milder weekend but faces extensive rain as snow becomes showers on Saturday.

The end of the weekend will be better throughout central Britain, as only the far north and coastal areas will be affected. They will see showers, strong winds and - briefly - even a spot of sunshine breaking out.
