A family has been left devastated after their baby daughter, Kiara, died just a week before her third birthday.

The youngster was strapped into her mum's silver Mini while the parent went into her husband's workplace in Cardigan, west Wales to grab some money. When she came back, the vehicle was gone, sparking a frantic search for her daughter.

Mum Kim Rowland initially thought the Mini had been stolen, but two hours later emergency services realised it had rolled into a river.

When police made the discovery, they dived into the river to rescue Kiara, but unfortunately it was too late.

The Mirror reports that her father, Jet Moore, has written on Facebook: "We thought she and the car had been taken. The police found the car a while later and went way beyond the call of duty jumping in and pulling her out.

"They tried to revive her for hours but unfortunately could not. Everyone done their best.

"Thank you all so much for the support it means the world!!!

"She was an incredible happy young girl who lived I hope a great adventurous fun life. And may have done more than most people Been skiing twice and skied herself!

"Paddled the Great Glen Scotland, paddles the Wye, played on every beach we could. Had a loving family and made us all happy.

"She always wanted to be called RAR RAR which was our nickname for her. Love her so much."

The awful tragedy has deeply affected the small town, with some people leaving messages, balloons and flowers near the river where Kiara was found.

Police have confirmed that they're not looking for any suspects in relation to the death.

Deputy Chief Constable of Dyfed Powys Police Darren Davies wrote on Twitter: "Tragic outcome and sincerest condolences to the family.

"Incredible bravery and selflessness shown by officers who entered the water and rescued the child."

Cardigan town councillor Graham Evans told Wales Online: "We're all thinking of the family at this time. I'd like to also pay tribute to the emergency services for all their hard work. It's a huge shock. The town is very quiet today."
