Infamous Moors murderer Ian Brady's ashes have been disposed of at sea, following a cremation last week.

According to the BBC, the child killer's remains were taken out to sea in the middle of the night, after a court ruled that the body should be disposed of in a way that did not cause 'offence and distress' to his victims' families.

Brady, who alongside his partner Myra Hindley tortured and killed five children between 1963 and 1965, died of natural causes. It was reported that he had requested that his ashes be scattered in Glasgow, where he grew up. However, Glasgow City Council said they would refuse any request.

On 25 October his body was collected from the Royal Liverpool Hospital's mortuary and he was taken via a police escort to Southport Crematorium at 10pm where he was burnt - no music or flowers were allowed.

His ashes were then placed into a weighted biodegradable urn and dumped into Liverpool Marina at 2.30am.

In a statement, Tameside and Oldham councils said: "We are pleased that this matter is now concluded and we are grateful for the support and professionalism shown... to ensure Ian Stewart-Brady's body and remains were disposed of expediently at sea in a manner compatible with the public interest and those of the victim's relatives."

Brady, who was 79 when he died in May, was jailed in 1966 alongside Hindley for the murders of 12-year-old John Kilbride, Lesley Ann Downey, 10, and Edward Evans, 17.

In 1985, he admitted to killing 16-year-old Pauline Reade and Keith Bennett, 12.

The body of Bennett was never found, but is believed to be buried on Saddleworth Moor, Oldham, where the rest of the victims were found. His mother Winnie Johnson pleaded with Brady to reveal where he was buried but he never did.

Brady was held at Ashworth High Security Hospital from 1985 until his death. Hindley died in 2002 and her remains were treated in a similar way, with a late cremation after 20 undertakers refused to handle her burial.
