A 17-month-old little boy has tragically died after being hit by a vehicle in a hotel car park.

Witnesses at the Ibis Hotel in Salford Quays near Manchester reported hearing 'blood-curdling screams' after the incident, which police are saying was a 'tragic accident'.

Police were called to reports of a collision involving a child and Toyota Rav-4 at a car park shortly after 9pm on Thursday, according to reports.

Eye-witnesses told the Manchester Evening News a woman was seen at the scene with 'blood on her face', as others tried desperately to save the little boy's life.

Paramedics and police rushed to the incident, but sadly the little boy died at the scene.

Officers from the Greater Manchester Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are investigating but have said that at this time they believe it was a 'tragic accident with no suspicious circumstances'.

Police Sergeant Brian Orr told the MEN: "This was a heart-breaking incident involving a young boy which has understandably left his family distraught and the thoughts of everyone in the SCIU are with them at this terrible time.

"At the moment this appears to have been a truly tragic accident and not a suspicious incident. However, we have launched an investigation to establish a full understanding of exactly what happened."

Witnesses said there was a heavy police presence with around 15 police cars, some unmarked, and a number of ambulances and rapid response vehicles at the scene.

Sergeant Orr added: "Anybody with information should contact the SCIU on 0161 856 4741."
