A number schools across the UK have been evacuated after receiving hoax bomb threats, the Mirror reports.

The threats reportedly said that a bomb had been placed on school grounds, and that it would be detonated if demands were not met.

A Jewish, Modern Orthodox school in London tweeted to say that it carried out an evacuation 'in conjunction with the CST and the Metropolitan Police'.

One person tweeted: "School has been evacuated because of a threat. Lots of people with no jackets standing in the snow. Apparently not just us."

The newspaper also reports that Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary school in Tolworth was evacuated.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "We have received reports from a large number of schools in our region they have received threatening emails.

"The emails inform the school that a bomb has been placed on the grounds and will be detonated if they don't hand over cash.

"Detectives have looked into the emails, which appear to originate from the US, and can confirm there is no viable threat.

"Schools have been visited by police to reassure them that the incident is being treated as a hoax and address any concerns.

"We take all incidents of this nature extremely seriously and an investigation into the emails in question is underway."

Northumbria Police also tweeted an update that confirmed there had been no school evacuations in the area.:

A later tweet read: "A handful of reports that schools have been evacuated. That is not the case here in Northumbria. Schools have been spoken to by officers to provide some reassurance but nobody has been asked to evacuate."

Hundreds of schools in the UK have been closed today as a result of the weather, following a weekend of heavy snow. A yellow severe weather warning for ice has also been issued by the Met Office for parts of the country.
