A woman has spoken out about how she shot a masked intruder with her crossbow after a gang of men burst into her home with a machete.

Grandmother Anji Rhys, 49, says she took the bow from her wall when the four men smashed their way into her home, mistakenly believing it was a 'drug den'.

Anji, an ex-Thai boxer, told the Sun she was watching TV when she heard a noise like 'an explosion'.

"I ran to see and was met by a masked man with a hammer," she told the paper.

"He was about 6ft 6in with a blue bandana hiding his face.

"The gang chased me into the living room so I grabbed my crossbow from the wall. I had a tussle with a second man with a machete, a skinny man who walked with a stoop."

She says when the man spotted the crossbow he attempted to grab it, but she spun out of his way and was able to shoot him in the stomach from close range.

"One tried to grab me but I shot him in the belly. Then they ran," she said.

"I hit one in the belly at close range. He shouted, 'You fucking bitch! You shot me!'"

After the men fled, Anji called police, who questioned her and are now investigating the break-in. She said cops did not arrest her, unlike in the case of Richard Osborn-Brooks, the pensioner who fatally stabbed burglar Henry Vincent, because no victim had come forward. Well, he's not likely to, is he?

Speaking about the Osborn-Brooks incident, Anji told the Sun: "He was defending himself. What would the alternative have been? Let himself be robbed? Be killed?

"I know I have weapons but the man I shot was carrying a weapon too."

Anji said officers did take her crossbow - which she has nicked 'Manstopper' - from her. However, she has a number of other weapons, which she says are to protect her 22-year-old son Dillon and her partner Rebecca.

Amazingly, despite all the commotion, Anji's 82-year-old mother managed to sleep through the entire incident.

Bedfordshire Police said: "We were called to reports of a burglary. Four men had forced entry armed with weapons. The occupant confronted the men and they fled after a short altercation.

"The victim told police she shot one intruder with a crossbow but we have so far been unable to trace any injured party."
