A prison guard who has been jailed for performing a sex act on a prisoner in his cell on Christmas Day wept as her sentence was handed down at Mold Crown Court.

26-year-old Emily Watson developed feelings for prisoner John McGee whilst she was working. McGee was serving eight years for death by dangerous driving.

The court heard how Watson went to McGee's cell on several occasions, performing oral sex on him twice and having full sex with him on another.

North Wales Live reported that the secretive relationship was discovered after she was noticed speaking to McGee for unusually long amounts of time at Wrexham's HMP Berwyn.

Upon investigation it was discovered that the pair had been contacting one another via a contraband phone that McGee was hiding inside a PlayStation inside his cell. He also had a screwdriver that resembled a pen in order to access the illegal iPhone 6.

The court also heard that Watson sent naked videos of herself to the prisoner and that the pair had virtual sex over the FaceTime app.

When Watson was not on shift, McGee would call her up on a number registered under a different name on the prison's official phone. At one point they spoke to each other on that phone 96 times in a period of only one month.

Watson started her employment at HMP Berwyn in 2017 but did not engage in the relationship with Mr McGee until some time afterwards.

The investigation also discovered that Watson had travelled to Liverpool at the behest of McGee to go to his sister's house. That fact was discovered by automatic number plate recognition technology.

Once the suspicions were aroused, the secret iPhone was discovered and the Instagram contact was found out. Watson was then arrested in January last year.

Today, she was sentenced to 12 months in prison.

In court, Watson said that she understood and regretted her decisions, as well as the potential effects for the family of the person killed by McGee for which he was imprisoned.

In sentencing, Judge Niclas Parry said: "Everything about this case is so, so wrong.

"One can only hope that the sentence of eight years imprisonment would have been some comfort to the family of Mr Bratin [McGee's victim].

"Therefore it is difficult to imagine the feel of betrayal they must have felt at finding out that he was able to have free access to an iPhone in prison and conduct a sexual relationship from his prison cell.

"This quite reprehensible behaviour was willingly entered into for nothing other than thrill-seeking and personal gratification, having been flattered."

John McGee was also sentenced to 12 months in prison to run concurrently with his current sentence.
