Buckingham Palace has announced that the Queen will be stepping down as patron of a number of charities and organisations just before her 91st birthday.

The 25 patronages will be passed on to other members of the royal family and will affect charities such as Save the Children UK, Battersea Dog's Home and NSPCC, alongside organisations including the Royal Geographical Society and the Rugby Football Union.

In statement the palace said: "Her Majesty will continue to serve as patron to hundreds of charities and institutions but will now share this work with her family. Many of the organisations listed below already have other members of the Royal Family as vice-patrons or presidents, which will ensure a smooth transition.

"This decision follows the example set by the Duke of Edinburgh who resigned from a number of patronages on the occasion of his 90th birthday in 2011."

The Queen became the UK's longest reigning monarch in September and this move has got people speculating on Twitter that this could be the start of her retiring the throne.

This doesn't seem to be her taking it easy, though, in total the Queen is patron to over 600 charities and she will continue her work with the remaining groups.
