Jamie Carragher has been suspended from Sky Sports for the rest of the season after he was filmed spitting at a family's car.

Sky Sports has confirmed the news, with a spokesperson saying: "Following an internal review, Sky has suspended Jamie Carragher for the remainder of the football season.

"Jamie has taken full responsibility for what has happened and we will ensure he gets the help he needs to guarantee something like this never happens again.

"Before the start of the next season we will sit down with Jamie to discuss whether he is ready to return to his role."

The former Liverpool and England player was filmed spitting on a 14-year-old Manchester United fan after her dad had goaded him about Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to United this weekend.

The girl told the Mirror she was left in tears following the incident, with her dad telling the newspaper: "I was stunned. I had not insulted him. I had not sworn at him. I have not got out and banged on his car. I have not done anything abusive to him, I've not stuck two fingers up at him.

"I've met footballers before and they have always been very accommodating. I thought, 'Jamie Carragher, he is going to be up for a laugh.' So when he did spit I was taken aback.

"I looked at my daughter and she was tearing up. I said, 'Did he hit you?' and she said, 'He hit me in the face.'

"For a grown man to do that to a girl who had not done anything... She was sat in a passenger seat while her dad was trying to have a bit of harmless banter.

"There is no two ways about it. He saw her."

Carragher spoke to the paper to say it was "a bit more than, 'Hiya Jamie, it was 2-1'," telling the outlet it was on for 'two or three times'. He also said he had phoned the girl to apologise for his behaviour, something both her mum and dad had thanked him for.

The former footballer also tweeted to say his behaviour had been 'out of order'.

In a public apology he said his behaviour 'cannot be condoned', adding that his 'biggest regret was that a young girl was caught up in the middle of the altercation'.

Speaking on Sky News he said: "I have brought shame on the name of football. I was a role model, people looked to me."

He has also tweeted to urge fans to 'leave the family alone' after the man involved in the incident revealed he had been receiving death threats.
