A 20-year-old student died after 'drinking too much alcohol' during a society initiation.

Ed Farmer, a first year economics student at Newcastle University, was taking part in a drinking challenge in order to join the agricultural society when he stopped breathing.

He was rushed to hospital where he died the next day, with his parents at his bedside.

One student from the university told the Daily Mail: "Apparently, it was part of a society initiation. He got really drunk and they didn't realise he had stopped breathing until it was too late."

In a statement after his son's death his dad said: "You have undoubtedly proved to each and every one of us that there is such a thing as "the guy who has it all" - the intelligence, the humour, the looks and the personality. Not many people can challenge a position like that. Thank you for all the memories.

"The family would like to thank all the staff at the hospital and university who have supported them throughout this time."

A friend of Ed said: "He was just a really lovely boy, liked by everyone. He always had a smile on his face."

The university said in a statement: "In close collaboration with our students' union, we take a very hard line on all activities and behaviours that may constitute a risk to the safety of our students.
