A woman who had been taking the contraceptive pill for 10 years has given birth to triplets.

Nicola Stead, 30 and her partner Chris, were surprised to find out that Nicola was pregnant at all, let alone pregnant with triplets.

She had no idea that she was pregnant until she began experiencing awful morning sickness last June, at which point she decided to take a test to check that she wasn't pregnant. Despite having been on the pill for a decade, it turned out that she was.

They opted to have an early scan five weeks later, revealing that they were expecting not one child, but three.

On 27 December she gave birth to two boys and a girl: Joshua James, Oliver George, and Mila Rose. They all weighed over 4lbs and were healthy, which is nice.

Nicola, who works for children's TV channel CBeebies said: "I'd been taking the pill since I was in my early twenties and we were saving for our first home together when I started to feel unwell.

"I was experiencing extreme morning sickness and I decided to take a pregnancy test just to be sure. I never imagined I'd actually be pregnant because of my awful sickness, stomach cramps and headaches, we decided to book in for an early scan.

"The sonographer couldn't see anything at first and I thought I'd lost them but after an internal scan they revealed we were expecting triplets and they were non identical."

Needless to say the couple were baffled and terrified by the news, but they are now over that - and over the moon with their new additions.

Nicola Stead, 30, had no idea she was pregnant.

The triplets were a huge surprise.

"We couldn't believe it, we were was scared, excited, anxious all in one," Nicola continued.

"There's no multiples in my family and despite worrying that I wasn't going to be strong enough to do it at first, I managed to carry them up until 33 weeks and four days.

"They only spent two weeks in hospital as they were so healthy and since being home it's only Joshua who has been ill.

"He contracted bronchitis two weeks ago but after two days in hospital he was back home, I'm so glad I trusted my instincts and got him checked out.

"Now that they're here, we couldn't image our lives without them, it was definitely the best surprise we've ever had."

Nicola had only missed two of her 28 day contraceptive pill cycle when she fell pregnant with triplets.

She added: "I had just stopped taking the pill for two days as I was going to have the coil fitted.

"I'd always thought I would struggle to conceive for some reason so when I found out it was a complete shock.

"I had released three separate eggs which means than none of the triplets are identical.

"We were over the moon when we found out we were having two boys and a girl at our 20 week scan."

That's going to be a whole lot of dirty nappies.

It's fair to say life has changed for them now - they go through a mountain of washing and nappies every week and looking after three kids is definitely a full time job.

Nicola added: "Looking after the triplets is a full time job but Joshua, Oliver and Mila all tend to wake up and feed at the same time.

"I've swapped my small car for a seven seater for the triplets and I'm constantly changing nappies, sorting feeds or washing clothes.

"Our lives have changed dramatically since we found out we were expecting triplets but we wouldn't change it for the world."

Bless. Who says there is no good news out there anymore?
