A person has been seriously injured and another has sustained minor injuries after a hire car smashed into vehicles in a bid to escape a Tesco car park.

Shocking footage shows the blue Citroen crashing into parked cars as shoppers attempt to stop the vehicle by ramming it with trolleys and hitting it with golf clubs.

The chaos unfolded outside the supermarket in Rickmansworth, UK, on Sunday afternoon after the driver and passenger were involved in an incident in the store stemming from a person being challenged for attempting to steal alcohol.

A video shows a large group of shoppers and employees gathered around the vehicle - which already has a damaged wing mirror - as it ploughs into a parked car.

One man then repeatedly rams a shopping trolley into the driver's door while another man bangs the windscreen.

People can also be heard shouting 'get out' and 'stop the car'.

One man then opens the driver's door, but after a brief pause, people can be heard telling the man to 'leave him in there'.

The driver revs aggressively and spins his wheels before crashing into more parked cars. The Citroen then shunts its way through more parked cars and alarms begin to sound, as one man smashes one of the vehicle's windows with a golf club.

After a short reverse, the Citroen manages to speed off from the car park.

Hertfordshire Police are appealing for information.

A spokesman from the force said: "At 1.57pm December 23 police were called to a report of a car being in collision with several people outside the Tesco store in Harefield Road, Rickmansworth.

"The ambulance service also attended the incident.

"One person was taken to Watford General Hospital after sustaining a serious injury. Another person sustained slight injuries and also received hospital treatment.

"The vehicle - a blue Citroen C3, a hire car with a registration of KW18 HGK - did not stop, but left the scene.

"It's believed the driver and passenger were involved in an incident inside the store moments before the collision, where a person was challenged by the store's security after attempting to steal alcohol.

"Officers are continuing to work to locate the vehicle and its occupants."

The condition of the person who sustained the 'serious injury' is not known.

Witnesses should call PC David Johnson, of the Road Policing Unit on 101, quoting ISR 397 of December 23. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
