Theresa May Could Be Subject To A Vote Of No Confidence

Jacob Rees-Mogg is reported to have submitted a letter demanding a vote of no confidence to the head of the 1922 Committee

To say it has been an eventful morning in the world of politics is something of an understatement. A few days ago, Prime Minister Theresa May consulted her cabinet regarding an agreement in principal for Britain's withdrawal from the European Union.

It's not gone down that well. Government ministers Dominic Raab and Esther McVey have resigned, other senior Conservatives have resigned from their positions, there have been cross party calls for a fresh Brexit referendum, and now Jacob Rees-Mogg - a prominent Tory MP - has called for the PM's head.

He is reported to have submitted a letter demanding a vote of no confidence to the head of the 1922 Committee - the Tory parliamentary group - Sir Graham Brady.

That's a confusing sentence, but it basically means that, if enough people support Rees-Mogg's position, this is the beginning of the end for May.

Here's what could happen.

For the Conservative Party to oust her, they need at least 15% of the 1922 Committee to withdraw their support for the PM in writing. If that happens, it triggers the confidence vote. Lose, and she's gone.

That means 48 letters need to be submitted, by the way.

If May loses that vote - which there is no guarantee that she will - there will be a leadership contest in the Conservative Party to decide who will take over her position.

That's big news for us all because whoever wins that leadership contest would be the new Prime Minister, and likely the person to preside over the difficult process of extricating the UK from the EU next year.

The decision of the 150,000 Conservative Party members and their MPs could decide the future of the United Kingdom for at least a generation.

You might think that there would be a general election, but there doesn't have to be. After all, that's sort of how Theresa ended up in the hot seat in the first place.

So, who are we looking at here? Who are the major players?

Well, Boris Johnson has long been touted as a potential leader of the party. As has Michael Gove. Jacob Rees-Mogg started this, so he can't be ruled out either.

The early frontrunner is actually the man who left the position of Brexit Minister this morning, Dominic Raab.

The Home Secretary, Sajid Javid is in the mix too.

If there is a general election - Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the Labour Party is the bookies favourite to be the next UK Prime Minister. As we've covered though, there doesn't have to be a general election at all.

Either way, uncertain times are ahead for the UK. But we knew that anyway. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
