Two people have been arrested in connection with the alleged 'hit-and-run' incident at Tesco two days before Christmas Day, which left a worker with a broken back.

A 45-year-old man from Edgware, Barnet, has been arrested on suspicion of theft and dangerous driving, while a 32-year-old woman from Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, has been accused of GBH, theft and dangerous driving, following the incident at Tesco in Rickmansworth, Herts.

Hertfordshire Constabulary hasn't released names of the pair but they both remain in custody.

Distressing footage from the 23 December incident showed a blue Citroen C3 hire car crashing into parked cars as shoppers attempted to stop the vehicle by ramming it with trolleys and hitting it with golf clubs.

A large group of shoppers and employees gathered around the car - which already had a damaged wing mirror - as it ploughed into other vehicles that were parked up.

The ambulance service and police attended the incident and a woman was taken to Watford General Hospital after sustaining a serious injury.

The Mirror has since reported that she suffered a broken back but is now out of hospital and recovering at home after spending Christmas away from her partner and child.

Another person, a man, sustained slight injuries and also received hospital treatment.

A Hertfordshire police spokesperson said: "Just before 2pm on December 23, police were called to a report of a car being in collision with several people in the Tesco car park on Harefield Road.

"The ambulance service also attended the incident and a woman was taken to Watford General Hospital after sustaining a serious injury.

"She is now out of hospital and recovering at home. Another person, a man, sustained slight injuries and also received hospital treatment."

A GoFundMe page was set up by the injured woman's colleague and friend to raise money to help with her recovery.

It reads: "This is my friend and colleague and she shouldn't have had this happen to her ever, but especially not just before Christmas.

"She should be at home with her family, with her partner and her child enjoying the holiday. I've created this for all those who have asked for a way to help, to help bring some positivity and love into her life when it has been shattered by selfish criminals.

"The money will help her with her recovery and help her to enjoy Christmas when she is allowed to go back home."
