Your heart always sinks when you realise you've lost something - it's usually the morning after a night out, when you find yourself scrambling around desperately trying to track down your phone... only to have to accept the fact that it's probably gone forever.

Well, one woman got quite the surprise when something she'd lost 12 years ago turned up - in the most unlikely of places, as well.

Linda Keitch, 69, was reunited with a long-lost gold ring after it showed up in her back garden. Specifically, it showed up on a carrot.

Linda (or Lin, as she's usually known) had been given the gold ring with a heart-shaped amethyst stone by husband Dave for her 40th birthday. However, it was a little on the small side, so she ended up giving it to her daughter, Sarah - who sadly later lost in the garden.

Lin said: "It got too small for my finger, so I gave it to Sarah, but she went up the garden and lost it.

"We searched high and low but couldn't find it. I was gutted and never thought it would turn up again.

"Although I had handed it down to her, I'm deciding whether to give it back to her or not. I may just clean it up and keep it in a box."

Thankfully, the ring has now appeared, having been found on the tip of a carrot from Dave's vegetable plot.

Linda, of Monkton Heathfield, Somerset, said: ''The carrot had grown into the ring. It must be a chance in a million.

"Dave dug up the carrots and threw them in a tub outside the back door without noticing anything.

"I picked them up and put them in a bowl of water to wash along with some potatoes and then saw the ring in front of me.

"It was so amazing. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was great to get my ring back after all those years.

"When Dave came in, I said, 'Guess what I've found - look' and he said, 'I've looked for that every time I've done that garden'."

Lin and Dave have said they'll be treating themselves to a new car for her 70th birthday.

She added: She said: "We'll have to make sure we don't lose that."

Sounds like they just need to be sure to keep that car away from Sarah...
