Carbs are life, as a wise person once told me, but that maxim rings all too true for the ex-fiancée of the world's fattest man.

Paul Mason, once the heaviest man in the world, managed to lose a huge 51 stone with the help of Rebecca Mountain, to whom he was engaged, and the paleo diet, which restricts carbohydrates.

But the weight started to creep back up and one day, Rebecca came home to find he'd betrayed her for carbs. Paul had gone behind her back, one thing lead to another and he'd brought home a loaf of bread.

Understandably devastated, she made the decision to end the relationship.

At one stage, 8st Rebecca, who hails from Massachusetts, US, weighed the same as Paul's excess skin alone. But as reported by The Sun, she says their sex life was 'great'.

Paul had a gastric band.

She told the newspaper: "I date guys I'm emotionally attracted to and that translates into physical attraction. With Paul we clicked right off the bat. It was really easy to be with him."

Although she was happy with Paul, his eating habits made her feel second best.

She continued: "He was willing to forfeit our friendship for his addiction, to lie in bed and drown those feelings with food."

Rebecca first saw Paul in 2013 when she watched the documentary Eating To Death: The World's Fattest Man. Later she slid into his DMs on Faceook and they ended up talking on Skype.

As she explained: "He made me feel special. We could talk for hours. He seemed like he was making an effort to get to know me."

In autumn of that year, she made the trip over to the UK to visit Paul, and she said they fell in love straight away. Their first kiss was in the back of the St John ambulance that he had to use for transport, and he moved to the US to live with her in 2014.

When he lost the weight, dropping to 19st, they could finally share more traditional dates, like going to the cinema, as he could now fit in the chairs.

Paul shed an unbelievable 51 stone.

She said: "I remember asking him, 'What's it going to be like to be a thin person again?' In his optimist way he said, 'I think it will be good'. But he said he would see pictures of himself as a thin person and he didn't recognise that person."

Ultimately, carbs brought about the end of their relationship - specifically, a loaf of bread.

Rebecca told The Sun: "I came home and there was a big loaf of bread on the refrigerator. We had an agreement that we were not going to tempt each other.

"I felt he wasn't taking my feelings into consideration. In the weeks after he went back to his old habits.

"He said he was getting bored with what we were eating, and his portion sizes more than doubled. His bedroom was the living room and he was eating at night."

In the end, Paul moved out of Rebecca's house in July 2018. She remains in the US - however, he is reportedly planning to return to the UK for more treatment.
