A German mother has given birth in her back garden with no medical assistance or pain relief. She then uploaded the video to YouTube where it has been watched more than 1.4 million times.

Sarah Schmid, who is now the mother of six children, gave birth to the latest member of her family in the playground outside her house in France.

She then decided to broadcast the whole thing online, including her painful labour, so that people could watch. Her children even watched while there with her in the garden.

After she streamed the birth, the video was posted to YouTube and has been viewed more than 1.4 million times.

Sarah is a bit of an expert at this sort of thing. The 36-year-old became interested in 'free-birthing' after giving birth to her first child, Johanna, at home with a midwife.

She trained to be a doctor, though she is now a full-time mum, and thinks that giving birth outside of a hospital is more relaxing. Since the first birth she has given birth to all of her children without any medical assistance

She explained her decision to the Sun: "A woman looks like a woman. It is the most natural and normal thing in the world. I don't think it's strange.

"In old cultures the girls would watch their mothers give birth, so they would know what it was like. Now the chance to do this is very small.

"This gives people the chance to see birth, and especially birth without intervention. It's a rare thing to see.

"Some people are excited, and some think it's the most stupid thing I could do. I don't mind. I love my happy and healthy family."

When she gave birth to her sixth child, not even her husband Tim was present. She went out in the woods and lay down on a blanket and got on with it.

She continued: "I didn't mind Tim not being there. I knew he had fears about the birth - especially because it was unassisted. But I felt I had to deal with my own fears first.

"I did not want to be overwhelmed with fear. He came afterwards. I called him when the baby was born."

Now that she has done it a few times, she thinks that it is the only way to give birth - for her, at least - and has even written a book on the subject, called 'Freebirth - Self-Directed Pregnancy and Birth'.

As long as she's happy and the baby is healthy, why not?
