If looks could kill... Kate Winslet garnered some serious side-eye from fellow actress Margot Robbie while praising controversial filmmaker Woody Allen during an interview on The Envelope web series with the Los Angeles Times.

American director, writer, actor and comedian Allen is known for his extensive work within the film industry, but in recent years his reputation has been muddied due to sexual abuse allegations levelled against him by his daughter, Dylan Farrow.

Allen has always vehemently denied these accusations, which have resurfaced at a time when Hollywood is going through a major period of scrutiny in terms of how it deals with sexual abuse and harrassment. Unsurprisingly, Winslet's gushing compliments earned the Titanic actress some raised eyebrows from her co-panellists.

"Woody Allen is an extraordinary writer," said Winslet. "He's obviously known for having created extraordinary roles, very very powerful and complicated roles for women, for many many years."

I, Tonya star Robbie sat beside Winslet in silence during the clip, but her facial expression says it all.

Winslet's favourable comments are surprising given this year's ever-snowballing #MeToo movement, brought about by the scandal surrounding movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

Farrow a took to Twitter, expressing her dismay at other celebrities' continued endorsement of Allen.

"Today Woody Allen releases another film nationwide. People like @jtimberlake, @JimBelushi, #KateWinslet, and others will promote it and praise him for it."

Allen attracted criticism earlier in the year for comments he made, saying that he was 'sad' for Harvey Weinstein.

"The whole Harvey Weinstein thing is very sad for everybody involved," he told the BBC. "Tragic for the poor women that were involved, sad for Harvey that his life is so messed up. There's no winners in that. It's just very, very sad and tragic for those poor women that had to go through that."
