When people get caught for speeding, there's a whole list of stock excuses they're likely to choose from. Some say they are running late, or their wife is in hospital giving birth - or maybe their foot 'slipped' and they didn't realise they were above the limit.

Whatever the excuse, police generally don't let them off with a warning because - for good reason - speed limits are taken very seriously.

But Waikato Police in New Zealand are so fed up with booking drivers, they've come up with a real 'simple trick' to avoiding getting caught. Writing on their Facebook page, they said: "There's an online site that has come up with a trick that means you never have to worry about getting caught speeding again!

"It is absolutely brilliant. Best of all, the method works internationally, in every country in the world.

"1. Look closely at the signs on the road that show you the speed limit. The number indicated is the maximum speed you can travel. Whether you're on foot, bike or car.

"2. Try to locate your car's speedometer. You normally find it somewhere in front of the driver's seat, on the dashboard. It has an arrow pointing to the number that reflects the car's speed. On newer cars, the speed is sometimes displayed digitally, with numbers.

"3. This last point is also the hardest. Adjust your speed according to the number shown on the road sign. The police cannot fine you if you do not drive over this number."

It seems like plenty of people took the tongue-in-cheek message in the spirit it was intended, as the post has been liked and shared thousands of times.

The post added: "Strangely, there seem to be surprisingly too few who are aware of this simple yet genius trick. And best of all, if you stick to it, you'll never have to pay a speeding fine ever again."

Oh my god - so simple!

If you ever did get caught speeding, you'd definitely want it to be in New Zealand and not the UK. The small islands in the Pacific Ocean have fines ranging from $30 to $630 (£15-£331) for speeding offences, compared to £100 to £2,500 ($190-$4,756 NZD) in Britain.

In the UK, maximum fines more than doubled after a consultation in 2016 found that the previous ones didn't take the potential harm of speeding seriously enough.

Under the new rules, motorists who are caught going 'well above' the speed limit will face fines starting from 150 percent of their weekly income - the former level was 100 percent.
