Dubai police have announced that they are testing out futuristic hoverbikes that look like they've come straight out of the Star Wars franchise.

Authorities in the country are looking to invest in innovative new ways of fighting crime and teased the new vehicles in the following video:

"The bike can also fly without a passenger and can go up to 6 kilometres. It can fly for 25 minutes and can carry up to 300 kg of weight at a speed of 70km/h," First Sergeant Ali Ahmad Mohammad from the VIP Security Department in Dubai Police told Gulf News.

The bikes were developed by Russian company Hoversurf and unveiled at Dubai's Gitex Technology week.

The bike "passed successful tests in extreme conditions - dust and heat" said its manufacturers, who released a YouTube video ahead of the launch.

"This is a special version of the hoverbike for the Dubai police. The uniform of the pilot is also provided by the police," they said.

Here's how Twitter reacted to the new crime-fighting technology:

This isn't the first time Dubai has been ahead of the curve technologically, the city recently introduced driverless flying taxis, known autonomous aerial taxi (AAT) services that will shuttle commuters around the city.

The vehicle can fly for about 30 minutes a cruise speed as well as being able to escalate to a top speed of 100 km/h.
