A high school student in the US has defended her choice of career after appearing in a student newspaper profile that has caused outrage.

Eighteen-year-old Caitlin Fink, from Stockton in California, decided to go into the porn industry, but discussing her choice in her school's newspaper has kicked off a debate around free speech.

Caitlin started off by selling nudes.

Having started out in her new career by selling nudes, she soon realised that there was money to be made. But when it became clear that the article in The Bruin Voice would discuss her pornographic pursuits, the school district tried to get it banned, believing it went against obscenity laws.

Speaking with CBS13, Bear Creek High School senior Cailtin Fink defended the article, titled 'Risky Business: Starting a Career In the Adult Entertainment Industry'.

She said: "I feel like the district sees it as a taboo thing that should be swept under the rug, but it's really not a taboo topic.

"It's just a topic that people don't like to talk about because it makes them feel uncomfortable."

On New Year's Eve, Caitlin left home following a fallout with her parents - however, working in porn has given her the financial independence to pay all her bills herself.

"When I first started selling, it was just for money," she explained.

"But then I liked the attention I got, being called beautiful. I enjoyed it because it made me feel good about myself."

She went on to went on to hire an agent and learned she'd be doing professional scenes for Pornhub.

When Caitlin started working in porn, she had to have a blood test every two weeks to test for infections. Producers also told her to clear up her body acne, otherwise it would show on camera.

Unfortunately though, Caitlin's first professional porn shoot was cancelled as a result and she hasn't earned anything so far with the adult video sharing site. She now has a second job as a dishwasher to make extra money.

English teacher Kathi Duffel, an adviser for the newspaper, fought Caitlin's corner for the article to be published, accusing the district of censorship when they demanded to see and approve the article before it went out. She said that Caitlin should be able to tell her story and that banning its publication would be a breach of free speech.

The Central California school district eventually approved the publication, and the article can now be read online.

Who knew high school journalism would be so controversial...?
