Photos of an old Wizard of Oz theme park have been busy creeping the internet out, in the same way that people are weirdly transfixed by photos of abandoned nuclear ghost towns and the like.
The Land of Oz theme park opened back in 1970 in the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina, with the hope that it would help make the ski resort town of Beech mountain a year-round tourist destination.
According to the blog Deserted Places, the theme park closed down in 1980 and fell into disrepair for the following decade, with many props 'vandalized, stolen, or left exposed to the elements'.
But some parts of the park - including the yellow brick road - remained intact, and in 1991 the park reopened for a day for Beech Mountain's Independence Day celebration.

However, judging from the theme park's website, it's actually now back up and running - despite many people saying that it's been lying abandoned for decades.
It's clearly a rumour they're used to - in the FAQ section, the question is posed: 'Is the Land of Oz abandoned?'
To which the answer is: "Don't make me laugh... the Land of Oz is a privately owned property that is open to the public during selected events throughout the year. We hope to see you there during our many seasonal events."
It does, however, also state that the Land of Oz is only open by appointment only or for special events, so it doesn't sound like you can just rock up.

Even if the widely-held belief that the theme park is abandoned isn't quite the case, the eerie photos have still managed to creep some people out - specifically Reddit users suggesting that they prove the original Wizard of Oz flick isn't a family-friendly technicolour musical, but actually a horror film.
It began when Redditor Matt872000 pondered: "That'd be the coolest place to film a horror adaptation of the Wizard of Oz."
This prompted others to suggest that an adaptation wasn't actually necessary, with slublueman saying: "Did you see those flying monkeys? The Wizard of Oz is already a horror adaptation of The Wizard of Oz!"

User thegeneraldisarray added: "Watch the original Wizard of Oz but mute it and put on Dark Side of the Moon [rock band Pink Floyd's notoriously trippy 1973 album]. Get high and watch. It's amazing."
Another Reddit user, slasherflick2243, also said: "My absolute favorite film as a kid.... Then after I watched it as a teen, I saw just how insane, dark and twisted it was.... LSD, Mescaline, Mushrooms etc etc, became my own personal experiment with that film. It's truly an amazing bit of astounding fantasy."
Thinking back to that scene where the witch literally melts to death, we think they might have a point about the horror movie stuff.
