Three company managers in China have been detained by police, after being accused of whipping staff with belts, forcing them to drink urine and making them eat insects.

An employee of the home improvement firm in Zunyi, Guizhou province, claimed that workers were put in these situations because they had not met sales targets.

According to the MailOnline, local police have now launched an investigation after shocking video footage emerged last week which showed several men being whipped by their bosses with a belt in front of other employees.

Another clip shows people drinking cups of yellow liquid while holding their noses.

It was alleged that other cruel punishments included kneeling, eating mustard and shaving their heads, according to Beijing Youth Daily.

A text message which is supposed to have been sent by managers told staff that they would have to eat three cockroaches for each failed sale.

In a statement on Weibo on Sunday, Honghuagang District Police said that two of the company managers, surnamed Guo and Cai, have been detained for 10 days, while a third manager, surnamed Huang, has been detained for five days.

According to the MailOnline, many people have slammed the company and offered their sympathy to the employees, others have questioned why the staff members have not resigned.

One member of staff told Pear Video that the company owed its employees two months' pay and claimed that if staff left instead of accepting the punishments they would have their wages cut.

According to Article 88 of China's employment contract law, company bosses are not allowed to humiliate and give corporal punishment to workers, the Chinese government said on its website.

It added that the employer will be liable for compensation if any harm is done to the worker.

It seems humiliation within the workplace can happen anywhere in the world as well.

Jordanna Ellsmore, 17, is all too familiar with this as she was laughed at and refused a job in a coffee shop 'because of her name'. Insulting or what?

She left after giving in her CV, only for a friend who was also in the cafe to message her saying that the staff in the branch had ridiculed her name after she left.

The friend who messaged her said: "As soon as you walked out they all started taking the piss out of your name, saying that your name lets you down and that they won't hire someone with a name like that."
