Hyundai Angers Vegans With A Controversial Super Bowl LIII Advert

Hyundai Angers Vegans With A Controversial Super Bowl LIII Advert

I mean, they've got a point, but still...

A Hyundai advert that aired during the Super Bowl last night has angered vegans after it compared an animal-free dinner party to some of the worst things imaginable.

Attending a vegan dinner party was put on the same level as having dental surgery, being forced to do jury service, giving your adolescent kids a talk about sex, and ending up stuck between two people on the middle seat of an aeroplane.

Bizarrely, it starred Jason Bateman, too. Even his cheery mug couldn't stop people getting bent out of shape about it.

Naturally, even though the advert was supposed to be funny, a lot of people are offended. After all, nobody likes having their life choices mocked by a car company, right?

The whole point of Hyundai's advert was to suggest that car shopping is a really tedious thing to have to do. I mean, they've got a pretty fair point there, if we're being honest.

So, during Super Bowl LIII they aired the commercial that compared going off to get a new motor to other things that Hyundai consider to be amongst the worst experiences that people can be put through.

Apparently, that includes attending a dinner party that boasts a very purple looking 'beetloaf'.

In the immediate aftermath, plenty of vegans have been driven to social media to react.

Amongst those to react (which, let's face it, is exactly what the car company wants) was PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

When Hyundai shared the advert in a tweet that said "what's worse than shopping for a car? Watch this."

PETA responded by saying: "ICYMI: The trend of 2019 is taking the elevator UP to vegan dinner parties (and an Earth, heart, & animal-friendly lifestyle). Instead of buying a car from people with outdated ideas, we suggest a vegan Smartcar by Mercedes. Great mileage & acceleration, turns on a dime."

Well, that certainly showed them.

However, a decent amount of people agree with PETA on this one.

Another internet user said: "The less than subtle vegan shaming in the Hyundai Super Bowl ad? Wow."

The threats started rolling in. Another Twitterer added: "Man, I love my '13 Elantra, but if y'all are just gonna insult a huge part of my life like that I'll find something else for my next car."

Wow. There's hardcore veganism and then there is getting rid of your car because someone said something slightly unkind about something you agree with.

Because it is all a huge publicity stunt, Hyundai actually commented on the outrage. It turns out that they actually love vegans and have done all along.

Well, sort of.

The South Korean car manufacturer said: "We actually love vegan food and are glad it's going more mainstream."

They even shared a recipe for beetloaf, which we can only imagine is like meatloaf, but vegan.

It's only February, but 2019 is already a strange and unforgiving landscape.
