Female police officers in a Lebanese town are being made to wear shorts in a bizarre attempt to boost tourism to the middle eastern country.

The mayor of Broumana, Pierre Achkar, announced the changes to the police uniforms - which only applies to female officers - and said he believes 'modernising' the dress code could increase the number of westerners who visit the town, which is around 10 miles from Beirut.

Speaking to RT, Achkar said: "Ninety-nine percent of the tourists in the Mediterranean region wear shorts. We in Lebanon want to change the bleak picture of Lebanon in the west."

However, as you can imagine with such an... 'interesting' change of policy, not everyone is on board. Conservative critics have accused the mayor of 'exposing' his female cops, while others are pissed off that it's only the female officers who have to wear shorts, the Lebanese Examiner reports.

One commenter wrote: "Even women police officers in the west are smartly dressed, what's the need to expose your women?"

While another said: "It's a great initiative to engage more women in municipalities. The only problem is that they're clearly not in standard police uniforms but are being exploited (and) sexualised by their employers."

A third took to Twitter to share photos of the women, writing alongside: "Brummana recruited policewomen. And they dressed them like that. Look at what their male counterparts are wearing. Are these women supposed to help keep the safety of the city or be the touristic attractions in it?"

Another suggested a better way to bring in more tourism would be to legalise cannabis use in the country and another resident suggested: "If they really want to attract the west they must put men in equally revealing outfits."

But one female cop who has been wearing the uniform, Samata Saad, said she and other officers like the uniform.

She told RT: "We came willingly to this work and we have accepted it with enthusiasm and we still hope that it will return every summer season."
