A mum of newborn twins from China has sold them for £7,400 ($9,100) in order to pay off her credit card bills - and buy a new phone.

The boys, who weren't even two weeks old, were sold to two different families that live more than 700 kilometres (430 miles) away from the mother's hometown.

The woman and her partner have now been arrested by the police, while the babies have been rescued and given to their grandparents to be cared for.

Police say that the woman, who's last name is Ma, gave birth to the children last September. They had to be put in incubators because they were premature.

The mother's partner, known by his last name Wu, failed to show up to the hospital. His parents also refused to help Ma out.

So, as a result of the lack of support, Ma decided to sell the children to strangers. According to the MailOnline, she flogged them both for 65,000 yuan - one for 45,000 yuan (£5,100) and the other for 20,000 yuan (£2,270).

The woman, who is in her 20s, claimed that she did it because she was 'penniless and heavily in debt'. Asia One reported that her family refused to step in because they disapproved of her pre-marital pregnancy.

The babies are now in the cars of Ma's parents.

The MailOnline reported that after Ma had used the money, Wu reappeared and demanded she use the profits to pay off his gambling debts. She told him the money had already been spent.

Cixi, Zhejiang Provence Police, received numerous leads over the sale of the children which sent them on a hunt to find the separated boys.

Both children were luckily found with the adoptive parents agreeing to hand them back after officers outlined the severity of what has happened.

According to the New Zealand Herald, people that are found guilty of child trafficking can be jailed for up to 10 years in China, while those who purchase trafficked children can also face punishment.
