A baby monkey that lost its mother in a road accident brought human passers-by to tears as it grieved its loss.

The young monkey wept sitting near its dead mother's body, after she was knocked down by a speeding vehicle in southern India on Friday.

"Losing a loved one will be painful for not just human beings. Animals too mourn. We saw the young monkey weeping over the carcass of its mother," K Saravanan, who witnessed the scene, told the Times of India.

Police kept the baby monkey away from the corpse while villagers carried it to a local burial ground.

There they conducted final rites of the mother monkey along with police and forestry officials.

Villager G Sathyanarayanan said: "The baby monkey jumped from one tree to another tree and followed us when we carried the carcass."

This isn't the first example of a grieving animal we've seen here at TheLADbible, in fact if you're a good owner to your pet, it will never forget you.

"He loved the dog and took very good care of him and I think Cesur is just sad because he is missing him.

"He wouldn't move away from the coffin, not even an inch, at the funeral and then he followed us to the cemetery and waited until he had been buried.

"Nowadays he visits the grave every day because he can't seem to get used to the absence of my father."

Ali says he takes Cesur for a walk to the cemetery in north-western Turkey's Bursa Province, where he spends hours guarding his late owner's grave.

This isn't the only instance of an animal mourning it's owner's loss.

The owner was a semi-professional cowboy who died on New Year's Day in a motorbike accident.

A close friend, Francielio Limiera, told the Daily Mail: "It was an unbelievable thing to see the way the horse behaved. If I hadn't been there I wouldn't have believed it myself.

"As we brought the coffin out at the beginning of the funeral, [Sereno] sounded like he was crying and as if he recognised that his owner was finally leaving him. He pounded the ground with his hooves and kept on whinnying. It was very sad."

Some experts believe that horses can be aware of their owner's death and therefore mourn for them.
