Thousands of people turned up to watch Los Angeles' tribute to the late Batman actor, Adam West.

Fans rocked up in full costumes to see the Bat-Signal projected onto the wall of the Los Angeles City Hall last night after the actor passed away last weekend following a battle with Leukemia.

The Batmobile, similar to the one West drove in the 1960s TV show, was also on the scene while crowds chanted 'Adam'.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, who led the event, were joined by Burt Ward, who starred as Robin alongside West in the cult TV show.

The Bat mobile has arrived for the Bat-Signal event @LACityHall honoring BatMan Adam West.

Ward told the crowd: "My friend, Adam, would want every single one of you to be incredibly happy and to be joyous because he spent his entire life as a performer making people happy, making them laugh, and trying to make this world a better place."

Meanwhile, Beck added: "I'm a real-life chief of police and I can't tell you how many times I have wanted to turn on the Bat-signal."

The light, which was provided by DC Comics and Warner Bros, was an exact copy of the symbol used in the 1960s show and was projected onto the building after a short countdown.

What a perfect tribute.
