An 18-year-old student has said that he wants to become his sister's legal guardian after both their parents died.

Kyle Nester and his 15-year-old sister Madison are both still in high school together.

Their dad Roy died at just 42-year-old on Christmas Eve 2015 and their mum Tammy passed away last month.

Their grandparents live more than a two-hour drive from where the Nesters are settled in Ohio. As they don't want to move, Kyle has decided he wants to take responsibility for his sister and become Madison's legal guardian.

"She's all I've got left, so I have to do everything I can for her," Kyle told ABC 6.

"I know it's not going to be easy, but I know I have the whole community behind me.

"They say it takes a village to raise a kid."

Kyle already has a place in college, but says he will make sure his sister finishes high school and that he has the support of the local community.

Residents of their town have been holding fundraisers and selling "Team Nester" bracelets to fund Kyle's legal costs, raising a total of £27,000 so far.

Kyle's football coach Bryan Schoonover told Babble that the senior is strong and an "extremely bright student."

"There are very few people who would not only be able to deal with the loss of both parents, and at the same time focus on keeping his family together," the coach told Babble .

"People have asked if I was shocked he was trying to gain custody of his sister and my answer since I first found this out was no.

"This is something he wants to do and never thought twice about."

And family friend Tracy Bayly described Kyle as "mature beyond his years."
