The BBC has revealed that the next Doctor Who will be Jodie Whittaker.

Prior to the announcement there had been growing speculation that a woman would take up the role of the thirteenth Doctor. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Kris Marshall and Olivia Colman were among those touted as replacements for Peter Capaldi.

Here's how Twitter reacted to the announcement:

Capaldi, who took the role in 2013, will leave in the 2017 Christmas special.

The Glasgow-born star told the BBC: "I feel it's time to move on. I feel sad, I love Doctor Who, it is a fantastic programme to work on."

He also recently told Radio Times that his regeneration as the Time Lord would be "more complicated than recent ones".

Steven Moffat, the show's lead writer and executive producer, is also bidding adieu to the sci-fi series after the Christmas special, to be succeeded by Chris Chibnall.

It's you're wondering why it is the show is able to change the actor who plays the Time Lord, it's because he has the ability to 'regenerate', allowing a number of actors to play the role over the years.
