Last night 22 people were killed and over 50 injured at Manchester Arena in a tragic suicide bombing at an Ariana Grande concert.

As events unfolded and the world recoiled in horror at a grown man taking the lives of children and young people, on what should have been one of the best nights of their lives, so too emerged acts of heroism in the face of terror.

From off-duty nurses and medics offering assistance and advice, and adults foregoing medical treatment so children could be treated first, to men and women queuing from early this morning to make donations to blood bank; Manchester has united in the face of those who wish to destroy the city's people and communities.

Yet another example of courage and goodwill last night came from Ariana Grande's mum, who was in attendance when the bomb was detonated, and helped escort young fans out of the venue.

Joan Grande was sitting in her front row seat when the terrorist attack happened, and assisted in taking some of the panicked teenagers backstage.

Witnesses in the arena told American news site TMZ that she was surrounded by several concert-goers who were waiting to leave the arena when they heard the explosion.

She and members of Ariana's security took around 10 fans backstage and waited with them until they were able to safely exit the arena.

Ariana tweeted about her heartache as the shocking events of last night unfolded. She wrote to her followers on Twitter: "Broken. From the bottom of my heart, I am so so sorry. I don't have words."

Earlier this evening, US officials announced British authorities have identified the suspected Manchester suicide bomber as Salman Abedi. He is believed to be a British man of Libyan origin.

Manchester refused to break after last night's attack. Off-duty medics showed up to help out, taxi drivers worked for free and hundreds of residents offered up beds, sofas and cups of tea for those affected.
