Leicester City Bet Winner Reveals Latest Punt Paid For Xmas Shopping

A lucky bloke.

A Leicester City fan who won £20,000 on a drunken bet on the football club winning the Premier League has joked he may turn professional after scooping another punt that paid for his entire Christmas shopping.

Leigh Herbert placed a £5 stake on his team winning at odds of 5,000/1 in August last year, and after the Foxes claimed the title in May he won £20,600.

He cashed out £2 of his bet just over a month before the club's triumph, taking home £5,600, but he went on to win a further £15,000.

But his luck wasn't over yet. The 39-year-old then took home more than £760 from a £1 football bet at the end of October, which ended up covering the cost of all his Christmas presents.

Reflecting on his big win, he told the Press Association: "To be honest I've been doing all right. I've had a few football accumulators come in. Not massive wins ... a few hundred pounds.

"I went Christmas shopping and we spent quite a bit on Christmas shopping for everyone, and we came back in time for the football. I put the accumulator on and it won which paid for all the shopping that we did."

Asked if he thinks he could make a career out of betting, he joked: "I have considered it but I don't think I could. The thing is, I've not gone crazy with it, I've not been making stupid bets.

"I have been playing it, and I don't always win, but sometimes I do. But I think I win more than people I know, but I've been really, really lucky, to be honest."

Mr Herbert has spent all his winnings by paying off his credit cards, buying a car, and going on a camping trip to Cornwall.

"I definitely had a good time spending it. The way I see it - I didn't have it before and it was a win so I enjoyed it," he said.

"It's just nice not to have to worry about anything, and you can do what you want, and go where you want, and not worry about money."

A Leicester fan for more than 25 years, Mr Herbert, from Enderby, south Leicester, said he never lost faith in his team throughout the 2015/16 season.

William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly said: "Put into perspective, Leicester's Premier League victory was longer odds than Nessie being found, Elvis being alive or little green men coming down from Mars and settling on Earth.

"5000/1 are the biggest odds we have ever paid out on a single bet and almost certainly will ever pay out."

Mr Herbert has placed a £10 bet at 100/1 on Leicester winning the Champions League, so more may still be yet to come.
