Well there's now another victory for the Internet over religion: memes are now more popular than the son of God, with searches on Google for 'Meme' now out-ranking searches for 'Jesus'.

Christianity boasts around 2.2 billion followers in the world who are devoted to the church, but number of church goers in the UK has been on the decline for decades.

On the other hand, the numbers of us worshipping at the altar of dat boi, Harambe and philosoraptor look to be growing. Searches for 'meme' have been on the rise since 2011, with people increasingly wanting to get their hands on the dankest shit on the web.

The word 'meme' was actually coined by prominent atheist Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book 'The Selfish Gene', as an attempt to explain the way cultural information spreads. Internet memes are a subset of Dawkins' general meme concept that are specific to the culture and environment of the Internet.
There's no news on whether Dawkins has found out that his neologism is outranking our supposed lord and saviour but I'm guessing he'll be pretty pleased about it when he finds out.
