The guy behind Tesla and the SpaceX program has given us a look inside his underground plan to transport cars in Los Angeles at incredible speeds.

Elon Musk's latest venture, amusingly titled The Boring Company, plans to reduce traffic nightmares in the city with a series of subterranean tunnels. But cars won't be able to calmly drive through these channels at a leisurely pace.

They are hooked onto a cable which drags the vehicle at a whopping 200 kilometres an hour.

Musk has uploaded a video of the company testing the new technology...

The first tunnel will take cars from LAX airport to Culver City, Santa Monica and Sherman Oaks.

The broader plan is to have a network of passageways underneath LA which will get people to their destination within minutes.

The venture gives off Minority Report vibes where pods accelerate along super highways at astonishing speeds.

During a TED talk last month, Musk explained: "Right now, one of the most soul-destroying things is traffic. It affects people in every part of the world. It takes away so much of your life. It's horrible. It's particularly horrible in LA."

He says one of the important tasks of the project is being able to seamlessly transport vehicles from above ground to the tunnels below and vise versa. Musk says there will be dedicated lifts this. Check out The Boring Company's slick video here...

In the video, you can see that the tunnel system will also accommodate pedestrians and cyclists.

Musk says the possibilities for the project are pretty much endless.

He said: "There's no real limit to how many levels of tunnel you can have. You can go much further deep than you can go up. The deepest mines are much deeper than the tallest buildings are tall, so you can alleviate any arbitrary level of urban congestion with a 3D tunnel network."

Musk says while there is a great deal of interest and investment in things that can fly, his tunnel system will be a long-term, relatively low-impact solution to dealing with congestion.

The idea ties in with Musk's proposed Hyperloop, which would transport people and freight faster than a passenger plane. It would use magnets to levitate above the track, allowing it to achieve high speeds.

But the idea has been criticised by some who say it is highly susceptible to disruption from a power outage or terror attack.

We'll just have to wait and see whether Musk's ideas pay off.
