Controllers at the ready.

Earlier this year I wrote about the sports which were looking to get into the Olympics in 2020 and 2024. Among the potential new entries into the games were jousting, lawn bowls and pole sports - which is essentially a competitive form of pole dancing.

But it looks like there could be new contender and - if you count it as a 'sport' - it's already one of the most popular on earth.

Yes, rejoice, you could be in with a chance of winning Olympic gold, because video games are hoping to be included in the 2024 Olympics.

Casey Wasserman, chairman of the Los Angeles bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics, has said: "Harnessing the power of new technologies like virtual and augmented reality to promote healthy lifestyles will be a key objective as we seek to create new games for a new era in 2024.

"We view e-sports' immense global popularity and continued advances in digital technologies as tremendous tools for reconnecting millennials with the Olympic movement.

"The 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles - a city always imagining what's next - where sport, entertainment and technology mix like nowhere else - would enable the IOC to stay at the cutting-edge of digital youth engagement."

It might sound far-fetched but Sky Sports has already broadcast a live FIFA tournament, so maybe our collective sporting futures involve us sat on our arse, rather than running around a field.
