Sam Allardyce Is No Longer The England Football Team Manager

Sam Allardyce Is No Longer The England Football Team Manager

That was shortlived.

He may have only had one game in charge of the England national side (a sneaky last-gasp win against Slovakia), but Big Sam's offer of resignation has been accepted and he has relinquished his duties as England manager.

Gareth Southgate will take charge for the next four matches.

The FA has released this statement: "This is not a decision that was taken lightly but the FA's priority is to protect the wider interests of the game and maintain the highest standards of conduct in football.

"The manager of the England men's senior team is a position which must demonstrate strong leadership and show respect for the integrity of the game at all times."

This comes after a sting from The Telegraph where Allardyce was filmed explaining how to get through FA loopholes to 'businessmen', who were actually undercover reporters, relating to third parties 'owning' a player, negotiating a £400,000 deal to help them do so.

The Times reported that FA chairman Greg Clarke was reportedly 'extremely disturbed' by the footage and, although Allardyce technically offered his resignation, the likeliest reason is because Clark and chief executive Martin Glenn gave him little to no choice. Here is the video released by The Telegraph.

As well as offering his services for money, Allardyce also mimicked the previous England manager, Roy Rodgson, and said England players have a 'psychological barrier' that mean they don't perform so well.

In the initial report, The Telegraph also stated: "A £400,000 agreement with a football agency firm is a potential conflict of interest for an international football manager as it raises the possibility that he is 'employed' by a company whose footballer clients could benefit from preferential treatment."

Allardyce has since released this statement: "Further to recent events, the FA and I have mutually agreed to part company.

"It was a great honour for me to be appointed back in July and I am deeply disappointed at this outcome.

"This afternoon, I met with Greg Clarke and Martin Glenn and offered a sincere and wholehearted apology for my actions.

"Although it was made clear during the recorded conversations that any proposed arrangements would need the FA's full approval, I recognise I made some comments which have caused embarrassment.

"As part of today's meeting, I was asked to clarify what I said and the context in which the conversations took place. I have co-operated fully in this regard.

"I also regret my comments with regard to other individuals."

Still, he's gone down in true Big Sam fashion, swigging a pint of wine.

And also with a 100 win record!
