Scary stuff.

You'd probably think that getting an apple and grape snack pack with your meal deal rather than crisps or a bar of chocolate is the healthy option, but that wasn't the case for one man who bit into an apple slice to find a blade.

Joel Powell nipped into Tesco Metro in Peterborough, to pick up a meal deal for his lunch and opted for the fruit, but was shocked to find a two-inch long blade inside the pack.

Twenty-six-year-old Joel, who works as a labourer, made the dangerous discovery on 9 May and immediately made a complaint to Tesco/ The supermarket has since investigated and found its supplier to be at fault.

He said: "I drive all around the UK with work and that day I was in Peterborough.

"I had stopped off for some lunch to buy a meal deal. I was shocked when I pulled the blade out of my mouth.

"Only for the simple fact I bit the flat side of the blade, if I bite the sharp side I could have cut myself or swallowed it.

"It was the blade used to slice the apple. It looks similar to a razor blade, maybe two inches long. I could not catch my breath, I was in complete shock. I would not wish it on my worst enemy. I was overwhelmed with emotion.

"When I went back into the store and the manager could not believe what he had seen. I feel blessed, that could have been a life-threatening situation. I was traumatised, I will not shop there again.

"It's not acceptable, mothers and fathers might have bought the snack pack for their kids - I was in complete dismay."

Joel put in a formal complaint with Tesco and was offered £400 as a 'goodwil gesture', which he has accepted.

He said: "I wrote a formal complaint which went to the investigations team.

"They blamed the supplier, saying it passed through the metal detector and all the security standards procedures.

"I said in the complaint that Tesco had to put things in place to make sure this doesn't happen again."

A Tesco spokesperson said: "We'd like to apologise to Mr Powell for this incident.

"Food safety is our absolute priority and we work hard to ensure we have robust processes in place to guarantee our food is of the highest quality.

"Our supplier has reviewed their operations and taken steps to improve them, including retraining colleagues and installing CCTV cameras as an extra precaution.

"We've also offered Mr Powell a gesture of goodwill and hope to see him in Tesco again soon."
