If you think you're having a bad day, spare a thought for this guy who attempted to shoot an armadillo and ended up having to get his jaw wired shut, after the bullet ricocheted off the animal and hit him in the face.

The unnamed man, from Texas, spotted the armadillo in his yard at around 3am on Thursday morning, according to Reuters.

Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe said the man told officer he went outside, saw the animal and opened fire to try and get rid of the creature.

Rowe said: "His wife was in the house. He went outside and took his .38 revolver and shot three times at the armadillo."

The thing about armadillos is, they're pretty tough little guys. As the man found out when its hard shell deflected at least one of the bullets, which then hit the man in the jaw.

He was airlifted to hospital, where he has since had his jaw wired shut, Rowe said.

As for the armadillo, who knows?

"We didn't find the armadillo," Rowe said.

So, presumably that means the little fella has toddled off somewhere, completely unaware of the trouble its caused. And, presumably the man who fired the shots has learnt a lesson about the tough shells of armadillos.

Comedian Ricky Gervais, who has been pretty outspoken about his opinion of hunters in the past, seemed to enjoy the story:

The incident is being investigated as a 'possible accidental shooting', according to USA Today.
