If you're bang into murdering kangaroos then it seems you have more in common with the Australian government then you might have thought.

More than a million kangaroos are expected to be said "g'day mate" to in the country as part of a mass cull, with the move hoped to protect endangered grasslands and wildlife.

Wildlife groups have criticised the plans and warned that the illegal killing of the creatures by farmers and hunters, could see their numbers rapidly deplete.

An Office of Environment and Heritage spokesperson for the New South Wales government insisted the quotas were "sustainable in the long term".

But Brad Smith, secretary of the Upper Hunter Valley Wildlife Aid group, disagree. He told the Independent: "If you take into account the numbers of kangaroos shot each year and the numbers hit and killed by cars, it's running into millions and millions per year."

Australia's national parks allocate 'tags' to property owners who wish to cull kangaroos on their land. They will be required to attach a tag to any kangaroo they shoot as a way to mark that it was a 'legal shooting'.

It comes after a man went viral after punching a roo last year.

Punch The Kangaroo Down, Sport?

In what be one of the most Australian things ever captured on video, footage went viral of a man punching a kangaroo in a bid to free his dog.

The clip shows a thirtyish male dashing over to a kangaroo who has his dog Max in a MMA-worthy headlock.

The kangaroo adds insult to injury by kicking the dog's front legs. Then distracted by the frantic owner, the marsupial frees the dog before squaring up against the man, eventually feeling the revenge of a punch straight to the face.

The 'roo, surprised at the hit, simply stares at the man and his dog before hopping away into the distance to eat a big ol' plate of humble pie.

We have reached out to the kangaroo for his side of the story. He is yet to comment.
