In a move that has shocked picture editing pros across the globe, Microsoft has announced it is bringing an end to its cutting-edge image manipulation software MS Paint.

Microsoft's next Windows 10 update, the Autumn Creators Update (or 'Fall Creators Update' in the US), will see a number of added features - however, it looks like Paint will be getting the axe.

First released with the very first version of Windows 1.0 in 1985, Paint has been a core part of Windows for the last 32 years and has been an easy way to do simple image and photo editing, without having to shell out for Photoshop.

Controls such as the paint bucket and pencil have become cult favourites for users. Chris Simpsons Artist is just one well-known proponent of Paint art, having created a number of illustrations featuring celebrities - and of course Simpsons characters - using the software.

Needless to say, Twitter reacted with sadness to the news:

So obviously there's still a lot of love for MS Paint out there. Someone get a petition started, it doesn't need to end here.
