Former Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond has been airlifted to hospital following a horror crash in Switzerland, according to Swiss media.

The 47-year-old, who sustained brain injuries after a 288mph rocket car accident in 2006, is currently being treated in hospital.

The crash came after he flipped a £2million supercar as he filmed his new Amazon show The Grand Tour, it burst into flames following the crash.

Police spokesperson Gian Andrea Rezzoli, from the St Gallen police, said an injured driver in was rushed to hospital by air ambulance, but no official confirmation of the star's injuries has been given.

A source told The Sun: "The crash was really bad. The car completely flipped and then burst into flames.

"There was real concern for Richard but the emergency services were quickly on hand and he's a very lucky boy.

"It brought back horrendous memories of the 2006 crash for those who witnessed it."

Hammond is in Switzerland filming alongside ex-Top Gear co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and James May.

In his first crash a decade ago, Hammond suffered brain injuries, and later reported loss of memory and experiencing mental health problems.
