A stolen 18-tonne lorry was captured on CCTV crashing through a residential street in Greater Manchester.

The footage shows the vehicle smashing down Hadfield Street in Oldham, where it crushes cars and overturns vehicles.

Fortunately no one was seriously injured, although the incident caused thousands of pounds' worth of damage to cars and properties, along with garden walls.

The lorry was taken from Si Tech builders yard in Oldham on Wednesday morning before ploughing through the residential area. The vehicle was later found, dumped and torched, in the Hulse Estate area of Oldham.

The resident who filmed the footage on a fixed CCTV camera told the MEN that neighbours were still in shock over what had happened.

He said: "We are still trying to come to terms with it. Everyone has been out on the street comforting each other and trying to be there for each other. It's the one good thing that's come of it."

Earlier in the week residents described their horror at the incident.

Mavis Pellowe, 76, owned the Blue Vauxhall that was thrown through neighbour Divya Gorisia's wall. She said: "I heard a bang and looked out of my window and there was no car there. I thought it had been pinched, then I came out and saw it had been embedded in the wall down the road.

"The main thing is no one has been hurt. Mine was a lovely blue car but you can mend cars. It's over now, normally it's such a nice street."

Police Sergeant Steve Prescott, of GMP's Central Oldham Policing Team, said: "The theft of this truck caused what can only be described as absolute carnage and it is astonishing that nobody has been seriously injured.

"Having stolen the 18-tonner from a nearby building yard, the offender then proceeded to drive down Hadfield Street with a Hi Ab arm attached to the back, which snagged a parked car on its way past and dragged it with ease.

"With this car swinging off the back, the offender continued to drive down the street, causing serious damage to at least 16 cars in the process.

"This level of destruction is unacceptable and I want to appeal to anyone with information, video or dash cam footage that they think could assist us in our investigation to please come forward."

A 28-year-old man was arrested, following the incident, on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking - however, he has now been released, pending further enquiries.
