A woman was left with third degree burns when her Vape battery burst into flames as she sped down a dual carriageway at 70mph.

Ellie Petty described how the e-cigarette exploded and left her burnt 'like something out of a horror movie'.

The 32-year-old's clothes caught fire and she was forced to swerve traffic. She beat the flames with her bare hands whilst still trying to control the steering wheel.

Eventually she managed to throw her burning jacket and battery on to the central reservation of the carriageway.

The IT consultant, who was driving back from work at the time, told the Mirror: "The batteries exploded like a gas torch, I could feel the flames on my side.

"I absolutely thought I was going to die. It was a horrific experience.

"The flames were coming up at me - I was on fire."

She told LADbible that she had nothing else in her pocket when the explosion occurred. After the experience, in which she 'feared for her life', she said that she wanted warnings to be put on batteries to ensure people were 'educated of the potential dangers'.

She added: "I bought from a reputable seller, so I think the sellers should do more."

Hampshire Fire and Rescue said it had been called out after drivers spotted Ellie's flaming jacket on the central reservation.

A spokesman said: "We would urge people to buy electrical goods from reputable sellers and to make sure they use the correct charger."

On its website the UK Vaping Industry Association states: "We advise consumers to buy from a reputable source, namely a high-street vaping shop or online retailer. If you have any concerns, talk to a store assistant.

"Mechanical mods are a type of vaping device which have no settings or electrical regulation, requiring only a battery and the press of a button to operate.

"As result, they have the potential to be highly dangerous to those without vaping experience as they lack in-built safety features. We highly advise consumers interested in using mechanical mods to do so only under the advice and guidance of a reputable retailer."

A horrific injury, let's hope it was just one-off incident.
